This beautiful Italian racing bicycle was acquired from it's original owner, who bought it from a Colorado bike shop in 1985. The Montello was THE bike to dream of owning in the 1980's, and was prominently ridden to an Olympic Gold metal in 1984 by Alexi Grewal. The 1984/1985 Montello was spec'ed in the catalog with the still "prototype" phase C-Record group, and most racers aside from the ones with killer sponsorships rode the tried and true (and better performing) Nuovo or Super Record gruppo. This is a great example of a bike that would be just as good as a wall hanger show bike as it would be a rider. Its not so pristine that you wouldn't dare risk putting a scratch on it by riding, and it shows just like a bike that was raced a couple seasons and then displayed.
This one is Nuovo Record, with a smattering of Super Record and OMAS hardware upgrades. It sports it's original paint and decals, which is a tribute to how well this bike was taken care of. 1980's Pinarello frames are notorious for having fragile paint jobs! The SLX decal and headbadge were removed for a sleeker look. This color is deemed "Team Red", and features an exquisite hand painted gold inlay on the borders of wet paint and chrome, in the pantographs, and around the internal cable routing ports. The water bottle bolts are Campy chromed steel hex head bolts!
The Montello model is positively identified via the lack of a chainstay bridge along with top tube internal cable routing
Condition
Excellent or better well cared for and carefully ridden condition. This passes for NOS at 5 feet thanks to it's NOS bar tape, gumwall tires, and glossy paint. No dents, bends, or rust anywhere. Overall paint and decals are glossy and unfaded with a handful of minor blemishes that take some close eyes to notice. The chrome has a few LIGHTLY pitted spots, and the driveside fork leg has a section of fuzzy scratches/scuffs. Driveside chainstay is very clean with no chain suck/slap wear. There is one spot that's been touched up with matching paint on the bottom of the downtube under the decal, and a handful of small gravel chips closer to the BB shell. There's a few 1-2mm paint chips here and there, such as the one on top of the cable routing port.
Components are largely excellent to near mint, with a few NOS parts. NOS parts include Turbo saddle in maroon suede, Avocet tires, Ambrosio bar tape, genuine gum (not repro) brake lever hoods, Gipiemme seatpost binder bolt, Campagnolo bottle cage bolts. All bearings spin buttery smooth. Brake pads look hardly used. Chain, chainrings and freewheel show no real wear. Shifters, derailleurs (except RD's OMAS pivot bolts have scrapes), bars/stem, wheels and front brake are near mint with no significant wear to note. Rear brake is overall very nice but has a bit of cosmetic marks on the arms. Crank shows some heel rub and other marks on the arm fronts.
