Product Description
The 1st generation Corsa Record rear mech was in a way a rebellious design. It was in an era of the radical Dura Ace AX and Suntour's smooth shifting modernized derailleurs, and campy refused to play into their game in the sake of better shifting or retain "classic styling" of Nuovo/Super Record. Instead, they created an artistic component that was a radical departure from the styling of Nuovo/Super Record, complete with (gasp) steel bolts and ancient technology. They knew their cult members would go wild for it's irrationality and beauty, and it became an instant classic.
This 1983-1985 pre production is called both a prototype and 1st gen. It is most accurately a prototype as the It's easily discerned from the 2nd gen C-Record derailleur, most easily by it's covered/faired lower pulley (this is the only Campy derailleur to ever feature this). It's also easily identified by it's steel bolts, large rounded faceplate with the Campy shield logo, and a polished finish (later models were anodized). There were a few different versions of the prototype with regards to the hanger bolt stop. This one has a small grub screw which adjusts to act as the stop, and I believe this is one of the earlier versions. According to Disraeli Gears the version with a sprung adjuster stop attached around the mount bolt was 1985.
Condition
Near mint show bike worthy! The faceplate, all four knuckles, and both pivot bolts are extremely clean—zero scuffs/scrapes, only microscratching. If you look at the front face of the derailleur alone, it appears very close to pristine. Pulleys spin smoothly with minimal wear. Pivots/spring feel great with no slop. Elsewhere, the upper and lower tips of the cage plate has scratching, above the mounting bolt is a section where the polish has been rubbed flat, and small bits of marks elsewhere on the body. This derailleur is polished and not anodized, meaning you could buff and polish some of these sections if desired.
