Product Description
This is THE bike that started the fat bike craze! Surley introduced the world's first production fat bike in 2005, in this bold purple color. This color was only offered for a year or two. 10 years down the road when somebody writes a book about the history of fat bikes, this is the one that will be on the cover! Full details on this early Pugsley model HERE on Sheldon Brown. It retailed for $2200 in 2005.
It may be early and historic, but it's just as competent as any Pugsley made today. It accomodates up to 4" tires. The main functional difference between this one and a 2014 Pugsley is the older one has rim brake bosses in case you want to run cantilever brakes! A few obvious cosmetic differences are the 2005's offset fork, and the newer models taller seat tube extension with a brace connecting it to the top tube.
The bike is built up with high end components. 1x9 speed XTR/LX drivetrain, hydraulic Avid Juicy 7 brakes, and Surly Large Marge wheels are the bulk of the build. It has a rather interesting Dia Compe headset with a stepped appearance from the 1990's. It features front/rear rack and fender mounts, rear facing track dropouts, and a 135mm front hub that can accept a thread-on singlespeed freewheel.
FRAME SIZE:
This large 20" frame will fit someone roughly 5ft 9 to 6ft 3.
-
Seat Tube: 20" (c-c)
-
Effective Top Tube: 24" (c-c)
CONDITION:
Great used shape. The paint is glossy and looks great, with just a few light marks. The frame is straight, and has no dents/bends/cracks/rust. It's been professionally tuned up, and is ready to ride. Brand new chain, derailleur cable/housing, and grips. Front tire has 85% or more life left, rear has 70% or so. Pads, cassette and chainring have plenty of life left. The only cosmetic marks on the frame worth noting are on the non-drive side head tube and fork leg, which have light scuffs. Crank arms have a bunch of the finish gone (no telling how this happened, but the metal's in fine shape).
