The Girvin Flexstem was an early suspension design for mountain bikes, around the late 80's/early 90's. These were used on bikes without front suspension, and provided about half an inch of "travel". They were quickly displaced when suspension forks became affordable, so there's not many of these out there. They're great for smoothing out the ride of a rigid road or mountain bike without an expensive fork.
