Product Description
Extremely rare piece of cycling history! The Mavic ZAP group was the world's first commercial electronic drivetrain introduced in 1993, 16 years before Shimano Di2! This would make a wonderful gift for the bike tech history nerd in your life, and are killer in bike displays.
The derailleur from this system is beyond clever. It doesn't move via a motor like modern electronic systems do. Its shifting power comes from your own pedaling forces, transferred via the jockey pulley. When you shift, internal gears connect allowing the derailleur to harness that pedaling power. Worried about running out of battery? No worries! You can manually shift to your desired gear by hand. I've included a snap of the catalog listing and a magazine review that explains the tech side of this drivetrain better than I can, in the pics.
Condition
Near mint with very low miles. This shows almost no signs of use except the obvious scuff on the top (clearly shown in first pic and later). Were it not for that scuffing, you could make a case for this being NOS. The pulleys don't have any signs of a chain touching them. There are some tiny cosmetic marks elsewhere not even worth noting.
