Product Description
The 2Nut was Chris King's first headset design, the prototype was made in 1975 and the first production models were made in 1978. There's little written about the early king headsets on the web, but here's one source from Classic Rendezvous.
This headset came to me on a 1982 custom Bruce Gordon frame, which was complete with several build documents. The parts spec listed "King headset if possible", leading one to think these headsets were hard to find even back in the day. Thus, it's reasonable to suggest this could possibly be a few years older than the 1982 frame date. The production ones from 78 and newer typically had "King Sealed Bearing" engraved into the head nut, this one doesn't have engravings anywhere. This headset appears to be a brushed raw alloy finish. Thus, this could easily be polished to a mirror shine if desired.
Condition
Near mint very lightly used condition. This came off our Bruce Gordon, which came to us with all it's components in lovely show bike worthy condition, and this is no exception. The bearings are buttery smooth and perfect, no grit or dryness. Cups have a consistent finish, with only minor surface level marks here and there. Some wrench marks on the flats, consistent with "use but not abuse". Worthy of a show bike as is, or polish it up to make it pristine.
