Product Description
This wicked frame represents state of the art "must have" technology from the late 1990's! It was marketed as a "Dual Sport" bike, which roughly translates this into one of the first Trail/All Mountain bikes! The front triangle is made fromm "Thermoplastic Carbon Fiber". It's a highly beefy form of carbon, which I'll leave it to an engineer to explain. GT designed the frame to climb well and descend even better, and be indestructible in the process. These have quite the following, as can be seen at this 36 page RetroBike forum thread about the model. LOTS of articles, info, and photos about the STS line there.
The early STS models (STS-1 and STS-2 specifically) had a reputation for cracking. GT had fixed the issue by 1998 with this model. The 1000-DS was only made in 1998.
Frame size: Best interpretation is this is a medium frame? Perhaps someone can tell me what GT designated this size as from my measurements:
- Seat tube, center of BB to top of top tube: 20.5"
- Seat tube, center of BB to center of top tube: 17.5"
- Top Tube, center of head tube to center of seat tube: 19"
- Virtual top tube, from center of head tube to center of pivot behind seat tube: 20.5"
- Serial number: 1299715, and next to it what looks like "18" or "16"
Condition:
Great shape! NO cracks or excessive wear in carbon or aluminum. Carbon finish has very few marks. Aluminum rear triangle has some light scratches, but nothing bad. Would easily buff out. Decals are mostly intact, with a few spots that have peeled off. Rear shock and fork feel great, and appear to have zero leaks or stanchion wear. Rear shock looks practically new with no wear. Fork looks good, but has some dirty spots on the white paint. Pivots are tight and smooth. Overall, it looks like this bike was ridden very lightly and taken care of.
Details:
- Rear shock: Rockshox Super Deluxe air/spring shock, 650lb spring, 5" travel
- Fork: Rockshox Judy C: Cartridge fork, 3.5" travel (?)
- Ritchey headset
- Kore stem
