Product Description
Silly rare Mantis steel stem, handmade by Richard Cunningham in the 80's! This dropped originally with the composite XCR and then Valkyrie as an "update" to the Mantis triangular 3 bolt stem found on the original XCR, Sherpa, and maybe a well-equipped Overland. The quill to extension joint is TIG welded, while the clamp to extension is fillet brazed. The top of the clamp fillet is raised in the middle, similar to the top tube fillets on the fillet brazed XCR and Sherpa frames from the early 80's. The extension is lightly ovalized, and features a nifty internal cable routing with a "ferrule" stop towards the front and the cable exit a couple inches back.
Condition
Excellent or better used shape. Chrome shows minimal actual wear, but has the beginning of pitting and a few slivers of missing chrome here and there. Overall it looks like well earned patina that belongs on a show bike. Top cap and hardware in excellent shape. I haven't even tried cleaning up the chrome. I'm sure you would get it at least a little nicer with a bit of effort. Or if you have a fully restored Mantis, send it in for a re-chrome!
