Product Description
Fairly rare second generation version of the carbon fiber Ibis Silk SL road racing bike! This ultralight and supple machine hits the scales at 14.4 pounds as photographed. It has a lovely build built around a full Record 11 speed gruppo (plus upgraded Super Record cassette). The Deda Zero100 stem and carbon Williams saddle are white and have a black stripe going down the center, mimicing the blue stripe on white on top of the top tube, and the blue tape and seatpost clamp are a very close match to the blue decals. The rear wheel is a Mavic Ksyrium SLE carbon has a white hub and decals to match the white frame, while the only downside of the build is a mismatched Mavic Ksyrium Limited front wheel with red hub flanges (carbon center shell). If you can find a front to match the rear this will be one of the most symmetrical builds I've seen! It wouldn't take too much to get this sub 14 pounds.
From the Ibis website: "The Ibis Silk SL used a refined layup of high modulus carbon fiber, fine tuning the prior year's weight savings and gain in strength. The carbon fiber headcups keep the weight down, resulting in a 58cm frame weight of about 2.2 lbs (1000g). The Silk SL is stiff but remarkably smooth riding - what you get is the responsiveness of a large tube aluminium bike combined with the suppleness of a Ti frame. Not only stiff and light but also very strong the Silk SL can survive a 900 pound frontal impact (at the front axle) before a failure of the down tube, stronger than many full-suspension mountain bikes! We also think you’ll find the understated graphics package a refreshing change in a world of gaudy team replicas."
The first gen Silk SL was 2008 to 2010, and was a bit heavier due to a different carbon layup, and has the later years Ibis "block" font logos vs the V2 circa 2011 to 2012's gorgeous scroll logo that Ibis used all through the 1980's and early 1990's. Of course, it has a real brass metal Ibis bird headbadge! Oddly, the much more common Silk titanium was not a road bike but a softtail mountain bike.
Condition
This bike came to me from a collector who had way too many bikes, and this one just barely got ridden! It is VERY close to perfect. The only wear to note is the paint around the downtube bottle cage bolts from contact with the cage and the front derailleur's outer cage plate has four small clearcoat wear spots. All components show barely any use matching the frame's condition. Bar tape is brand new. This bike isn't new, but it's damn close.
