Product Description
1963 Schwinn Stingray Knobby Tire: 20" x 2.125 Tire: S2 - Goodyear - Made in USA - Blackwall (NEAR MINT)
This Stingray Westwind Knobby tire made by Goodrich dates to the last quarter of 1963, making this among the very first Stingray tires ever made! These were used on the Stingray through 1964. If you are restoring an early Stingray, you know how scarce clean early tires are and you need this!
More thoughts on the date code. The attached Schwinn tire date code chart shows this Goodrich tire was made in 4Q63, via 4 dots in all four quadrants of first circle only. The date codes were recycled every 12 year period. This one is confirmed 1963 and not 1973 by two facts: 1) The 60's tires like this one did not have vertical molding lines between the circumference molding line and the tread, which was introduced in the very early 70s, 2) early 60's tires have a pink tint to the threads inside the tire, where later models were fully black
Condition
Near mint very lightly used show bike worthy shape! This tire has minimal tread wear, and shows no obvious cracking until you flex the sidewalls a lot (then you see just the slightest cracking). While inflated on a bike, the sidewall looks completely crack free. No cracking on/around the knobs. Rubber looks wonderful and deep black on the sidewalls, the tread could be cleaned better to look just as black likely.
